Missouri Prairies
In recent years I have enjoyed something new, hiking some of the many prairies
here in Southwest Missouri. These lands range from just a few acres to several
thousand acres. The prairie is said to be a thing of quiet beauty, however, much
activity really goes on there.
During summer and spring the prairie is
home to a variety of animal life: turtles,
birds, butterflies, snakes, and even
larger animals like badgers or buffalo.
At different times during the seasons
the many wild flowers adorn the land.
I have attached some pictures from
my hiking experiences.
Believe me, not everyone will appreciate the prairie in the summertime. First, it's
hot. I mean really hot. However, that's not really a problem for me as I acclimate
to the heat pretty well and once you've sweated completely through your clothes
it's really not that bad. Second, there's chiggars, ticks, and bugs of all kinds. Not a
problem either. I just carry along a can of "Off."
I remember a song from many years ago with lyrics that went, "You laid Your
hand, mighty Lord, on the range . . . laid Your wonderful hand on the prairie."
There are usually no guides on the prairies so I can take my time and enjoy
another one of God's handiworks and the surroundings.
